Name your house.

Everything else hangs off this. A name turns an address into a place. Something with a personality, a story, and a shape in people's memory.

Why it works

A name is the shortest possible story about a home.

Naming your house isn't pretentious. It's a tradition, and a really old one. Farmhouses, cottages and city terraces have carried names for centuries, because a name is how a place gets talked about when you're not in the room. "Come to Pear Tree Farm for dinner on Saturday" lands differently than "come to 12 Thornwood St."

It also gives you a compass. Once your house has a name, every other decision, from the scent to the treat tin to the postcard you hand a guest, has something to agree with. You stop decorating at random and start building an identity.

How to pick one

Five reliable places to find your name.

Botanical

Start with what grows there

The pear tree in the side yard. The magnolia that drops all over the drive. The rosemary hedge. If a plant is the first thing you'd point out on a tour, it's your name.

Feeling

Name the mood, not the building

Quiet House. The Long Table. Sunday House. If people describe your home a certain way when they leave, borrow their words.

Heritage

Pull from a family story

A grandmother's town, a maiden name, the ship, the farm, the phrase your dad always said. Heritage names carry weight without trying hard.

Place

Use the street, the hill, the view

Corner names, creek names, the number of steps to the door. Geography is free and it's already true.

Whimsy

Let it be a little funny

Casita Paloma. Casa Pequeña. The Loud Kitchen. Playful names get repeated, and repetition is the whole point.

The test

Say it out loud three times

Can you say it on the phone without spelling it? Does it fit on a small plaque? Would you put it on a cookie tag? If yes to all three, you're done.

Ideas to get you started

Five lists to steal from.

Stuck? Don't overthink it. Read down these lists out loud and notice which one makes you smile. That's your category, and the name is usually two or three words away.

Wildlife

What visits your yard, your feeder, your roofline.

  • Fern House
  • Rosemary Cottage
  • Wisteria End

Heritage

A family name, a hometown, a phrase somebody always said.

  • Mary's House
  • Donegal Cottage
  • The Baker Place
  • Nonna's
  • Kirkwood

Land features

The hill, the creek, the bend, the view, the weather.

  • Creekside
  • The Long View
  • Stone Hill House
  • Windy Corner
  • Ten Steps Up

Pets

The animal everyone associates with your house anyway.

  • Nyla's House
  • The Husky House

  • Barnaby's
  • The Old Dog Inn

Straight-up whimsy

The one that makes people laugh and then repeat it.

  • The Loud Kitchen
  • Casa Pequeña
  • The Nap House
  • Bread & Bees
  • Sunday House

And if the perfect name doesn't arrive today, use a placeholder and live with it for a month. Names settle in faster than you'd think.
