Personalized Christmas Ornament Ideas With Your House Name

Most trees have one ornament that gets a story every December. The lopsided clay star, the glass bird from a grandmother's box, the one from the year everything went sideways.

A house name ornament is that kind of keepsake, made on purpose. It says where you were, which year it was, and what your home felt like. Hang one each year and in a decade you have a collection nobody can buy.

You don't need a crafty streak or a big budget. Here are five ways to do it, from easiest to most involved.

1. Stamped clay ornaments (easiest, cheapest)

Roll out salt dough or air dry clay, cut circles or stars, and press your house name into each one with a stamp. Poke a hole at the top, let them dry, and thread ribbon through.

A custom house name stamp works for this, and so does a simple one you carve yourself. If you already stamp your envelopes and treat tags, this is the same mark showing up somewhere new. I linked the stamp and carving kits I use on the Shop page.

Add the year on the back with a paint pen and you're done.

2. Pressed flower ornaments

If you pressed flowers from your garden this year, this is the sweetest use for them. Set a few small blooms inside a little hanging glass frame, write the house name and year on a tiny tag, and hang it on the tree or tie it to a gift.

A flower press kit makes the pressing easy. The double glass frames I use for garden flowers are on the Shop page too. Check the frame size before you order if you want them to hang on a tree rather than a wall.

3. A tiny portrait of your front door

Sketch your front door or the front of your house, or hire a local illustrator, then have it printed small on a wood slice or a sturdy card ornament. It's one of the most personal gifts you can make for family, and it doubles as the artwork for your cards and stamps. Our home portrait guide covers how to do it yourself or commission one.

4. The name and year ornament

Buy plain wood or ceramic ornaments, then write the house name and the year with a paint pen. That's the whole project. Making one every year builds a set, and the plain ones cost a few dollars each.

5. Tags that double as ornaments

Stamp the house name and year on kraft tags, add a loop of ribbon in your signature color, and hang them on the tree. At the end of a gathering, each guest takes one home. It's the guest treat idea in holiday form, and nothing needs to be baked.

Keep it looking like yours

Pick one ribbon color and use it on everything: ornaments, tags, gift wrap. One color used a few times looks planned, and it ties the whole holiday to the rest of your home. If you haven't chosen yours yet, start with our signature color page.
